Isro Can Thwart Off An Attack By China Against India

Finer satellite imagery at cheaper prices

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has made available to the Indian users earth imagery data upto 1 metre at lower prices.Till now, users could get images only upto 5.8 metres.ISRO’s earth observation satellites can obtain images upto 80 cm in resolution. These remote sensing data are used by industrial installations, township planners, highway builders and regional planners in the private sector.Defence is the main user in government sector.Because of this impractical limit of 5.8 m resolution, private operators were opting for data from foreign satellites at a higher cost of $17 per sq km compared to ISRO’s cost of $2 per sq km.

This makes commercial sense also to ISRO.Antrix, the commercial arm of ISRO makes sales of Rs.1000 crore every year through its commercial data. Now this sales figure will increase.

China’s attack on India

ISRO has done a yeomen service in development of satellites and obtaining imageries from them. This will strengthen India’s defence from its arch enemy China. One of the reasons why India was defeated by China in the 1962 war that led to the loss of 32000 sq km of territory was because China indulged in the attack surreptitiously and without warning.More than lakh Chinese soldiers assembled in the India-China border McMahon line and started the attack suddenly. The Indian army was caught unaware. At that time in 1962, there was no satellite technology.Even USA had not entered into the space science in a big way.Only USSR had sent the first man Yuri Gagarin into space through the Sputnik spacecraft.

India can retaliate with nuclear option

But today, if China embarks a similar (mis)adventure against India, it will be exposed.Any assembling of Chinese troops across the Indian border will not escape the notice of the ISRO satellites.Immediately the information will be conveyed to New Delhi, which will then press the nuclear button against Beijing.China is aware of this.

Communication satellite

ISRO is gearing itself for the launch of PSLV-C17 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) on July 15th.The rocket will put into the orbit the communication satellite GSAT-12.The satellite weighs 1410 kg and has 12 extended C-band transponders.Indian satellites normally weigh 2000 kg.The lifespan of this satellite is around five years.Normal Insat satellite’s life span is 10 years. In 2002, the rocket was used to launch India’s first meteorological satellite Metsat. It was later renamed as Kalpana-I.This time, the communication satellite GSAT-12 will be used to relay telephone conversation, data and television broadcasts.

Indo China border

In 2008, PSLV-XL launched the lunar probe Chandrayan-I weighing 1380 kg into orbit.ISRO will launch GSAT-14 in the middle of 2012.ISRO has learnt a lot of lessons from its unsuccessful launch of GSLV-D3 in April 2010.It is working on rectifying the errors to make GSLV-D5 a success. To achieve self reliance in the development of Mark-III engine for GSLV, the S-200 solid propellant motor would be subjected to static test.In September this year, ISRO will launch Meghatropique satellite with France jointly. Then it will concentrate on launching Microwave Remote Sensing Satellite RISAT-1 in December this year.Even if the sky is overcast, these satellites will provide excellent pictures. So, China cannot assemble its troops in the Indian border to attack India suddenly under continuous overcast atmosphere.

Nuclear deterrent against China

ISRO’s Mahendragiri testing centre will be ready in another two months. It has Thrust Chamber Test Facility with modern facilities to test GSLC Mark III Engine.ISRO is also developing non-chemical, electro and ionic propellants in future.Launching a payload with nuclear fission material is also on the cards.India should remember that the only way to contain China against it is to use nuclear deterrent. If India is capable of delivering nuclear weapons at Chinese cities in a few minutes time at the press of a button, it will certainly deter China from attacking India. The final purpose of the research in ISRO is to achieve this capability – if it has not already achieved it.

GPS technology for civil aviation

Use of GPS (Global Positioning System) is well known for mobile phone users. But it requires more precision for GPS to be used in civil aviation works.Even a small error can cause a plane to crash.ISRO’s technology is useful in this sphere of activity also.ISRO has also helped Singapore through its PSLV launch vehicle to put its C-16 experimental micro satellite X-SAT in orbit. It has already started transmitting images to a dedicated facility in Singapore.

Transponders

ISRO is setting up many facilities to upgrade its technology. It is setting up a hypersonic wind tunnel to study a re-entry.It is setting up a plasma wind tunnel to study the behaviour of materials at high speed. It is setting up a national database for emergency management and a multi mission earth observation centre for satellites. It is also setting up an advanced research and development centre for spacecrafts.ISRO is also trying to integrate the sub systems of rockets at Sriharikota since they are manufactured in different parts of India.ISRO has 151 transponders and another 150 will be added in another one to two years time.86 transponders have been leased from the foreign satellite operators.TV channels are eagerly awaiting the addition of more transponders for their telecasting purpose. The failure of two satellites has greatly disappointed them.

Supercomputer

ISRO has built a supercomputer. It is India’s fastest one in terms of theoretical peak performance of 220 teraflops (220 trillion floating point operations per second). It is a GPU-based supercomputer and is named as SAGA-220.It will be handy for space scientists dealing with complex aerospace problems.

Resourcesat-2 can check Chinese infiltration

Resourcesat-2 has three cameras mounted on a single platform with a high resolution, medium resolution and coarse resolution. Its images will reveal snow cover in the mountains, glaciers advancing and also urban landscape. If it focuses its cameras on India China border, it can reveal lot of things including encroachments by the Chinese army.NASA has asked ISRO to build an orbiter that will provide the communication between the soil samples collected from the far side of the moon and the earth. The joint venture will be part of the Moonrise missions planned by NASA.ISRO plans to put Chandrayan-2 in moon’s orbit in 2013.It will cost Rs.462 crore. It will be a joint mission with Russia even though the spacecraft and rover will be built by ISRO.The lander will be from Russia.

ISRO will defeat China’s designs

ISRO plays a crucial role not only in boosting India’s status amongst the world community as a progressive nation with indigenous space technology, but also in defending India’s borders with China. We do not need ISRO for protecting us against Pakistan. If Pakistan wages an outright war against India again (the last war was fought in 1971 in which Pakistan was truncated by our army) it will be broken into pieces. But China cannot be equated with Pakistan on the same pedestal.China is a mighty superpower militarily and economically – it is far superior to India. We need nuclear deterrent to keep China in check. This is possible only through the work of ISRO.ISRO needs to be protected and encouraged in all its technological missions. The Indian government has allocated Rs.6626 crore for space development in its annual budget.

Manmohan Singh – more danger to India than China or Pakistan

Unfortunately ISRO was dragged into a controversy when the precious S-band spectrum was leased to Devas Multimedia at a throw away price. This daylight robbery planned and executed cleverly by the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (he is in charge of ISRO) was exposed by the media. The amount that would have been siphoned by Manmohan Singh would have crossed even the 2G spectrum scam amount of Rs.176000 crore.Today, Manmohan Singh is the biggest thief in Indian government.Under his custody, nothing is safe.Scams after scams are breaking out.Manmohan Singh is more a danger to India’s security than China or Pakistan.
